The book was handed directly to His Majesty and its contents were debated in person by the author and King Philip III during the monarch's summer vacation at El Escorial. A few days after finishing it, the king proceeded to dismiss the Duke of Lerma as his favourite, which granted the document enormous notoriety and several editions and translations to other languages. It was considered a moralized model of regal politics in opposition to those of other kingdoms in a period where the demands of a continental confrontation required undisputed action from the monarchies.
